Senior Run

Every year, at midday, students will look up from their text books and teachers will open their doors as the sound of running footsteps and ecstatic cheers fill the hall way. The students line the halls clapping and shouting, “Congratulations” to the seniors who have just completed their high school careers.

This senior run is a long lasting tradition in Ottawa High School. It is something that everyone looks forward to for when they become a senior. I think it is a great and fun way to end the year. This is supposed to be a fun event where students can spray silly string and dress up in crazy costumes. The teachers and administrators want it to be a good time for the seniors. However, they do have guidelines and consequences for people who take the fun too far.

For example, students are not allowed to bring spraying items like strong perfumes and other sprays. They are also not allowed to bring anything with wheels. If the rules are broken, the item that is brought without permission will be taken away. If there are extreme violations the school will not allow the people to walk at graduation. I agree with the fact that things should not be allowed to get out of control because it is in a school and there are rules that need to be followed and upheld in all situations for safety precautions.

The seniors that I have heard from have all agreed that not being able to have objects with wheels is safety taken too far.  Wheels can be dangerous when amongst a running crowd. I think that is a good and reasonable restriction to have. This year, the run was crazy. Almost everyone had several bottles of silly string, that when sprayed, covered the entire hallway from floor to ceiling. It was ridiculous how much clutter was just outside the classrooms including confetti, rolls of toilet paper, silly string and even scattered slices of bologna. I was expecting at least a couple people to slip on the bologna or banana and get hurt.

Considering the extreme mess after the run this year, I would not be surprised if there are some revisions to the rules for the upcoming seniors. I fully agree that there should be guidelines for the Senior Run and consequences if the rules are broken. There needs to be someway to rein the ecstatic senior class in inorder to maintain safety and control. However, I think everyone can agree that even with the restrictions the Senior Run was fun and exciting.

Do you think the restrictions for the Senior Run are reasonable?

“The wheel thing is a reasonable restriction.”- Senior, Elizabeth Rein

“They are definitely reasonable.”- Senior, Felisha Frogatte

“I can understand the wheel thing, but not the rule about spraying stuff.”- Junior, Derek Dix

“As long as the custodians think the stuff they bring is fine, I think it is okay.”- Sophomore, Winnie Conard
