Light Up the Night: Prom 2010

The lights, the flashes of cameras and walking down the red carpet at Ottawa High School; The OHS prom was held last Saturday, April 24 with the theme of “Light up the Night.”
Although there was controversy about how prom would be because of the change in attendance- this year was the first junior/senior prom in many years- the night seemed to be an all around success. Members of the junior class spent the entire week building the prom, which included many lights, neon, buildings and a graffiti wall. The day was spent by all students in attendance preparing to look their best and the night filled with dancing followed by games and activities at after prom.
Many people were worried about the rain that fell earlier in the day, but walk-in had clear skies. People lined the walk way with cameras ready to shoot at all of the prom attendants. Getting inside was no easy task, however. After the first set of stairs, couples had to walk through a gigantic star that was complete with very steep stairs. Luckily, there were no injuries.
Prom itself was also full of surprises. The rain started back up for a while, but after everyone was inside. The air conditioning picked up in the middle of a song and a breaker blew, cutting off all of the music. Fortunately, we had our handy administrators, sponsors and custodial staff that brought the party back to life. Next, all prom court candidates were called to the stage so that the winners could be announced. King and Queen were seniors Eric Messenger and Taylor Koberlein. Prince and Princess were juniors Jake Huddlestun and Cassie Brown. Both couples shared a dance for royalty.
After prom finished, attendants changed out of their tuxs and gowns and into something a little more comfortable for after prom. After prom was complete with food, games, an inflatable obstacle course and many great prizes. Some lucky students walked away with prizes such as laptops, Wii and guitar hero, and supplies that will greatly benefit seniors attending college next year.
The change of a junior and senior prom was a successful decision that made the night that much more special. This year’s prom was a fun and exciting night for everyone involved, and even though there were bumps in the road through the week with building, weather and stress, the night ultimately made everything worth while.
