End of School Year-itis

As we finish up the third nine weeks of the 09-10 school year, there is no doubt in my mind that many students, myself included, have nothing on their minds except for summer. Sure, they get sidetracked with those “useless” assignments along the way and maybe even a project here and there. Some students will even simply blow those off with the mindset of “This is pointless; if I’m never going to use this again in my future, why do it?”

I get it. Seniors finally get to leave the halls of Paradise High and move on to bigger and better things…leaving the rest of us behind. We underclassmen get the generous opportunity to remain in the wake of budget cuts and a new seven-period schedule. This is all the more reason we cannot wait for summer.

Summer is the only opportunity we have during the year when we do not have to be focused and pay attention at all times. Yes, many people do not even pay attention at school, and toward the end of the year that number largely increases. Being so close to the end of the school year, seniors are concentrating on leaving behind the slim opportunities that our small town has to offer and are ready to start their lives out in the real world. Juniors are ready to finish the last day of school, so that they can officially be called seniors, and park in a different lot. Sophomores will finally get some say in where they sit at games, and might have a chance at winning games during SAY WHAT week, and freshmen just simply will not have to be called freshman anymore.

This happens to us every year. Once we get to the end of the third nine weeks, our minds seem to wonder off even more than they already do, and we cannot help but daydream about summer plans, trips and no school. Although this is our favorite time of the year, with the weather getting warmer and sunnier, and our time at school slowly withering away, we all know how important it is to finish the year strong. None of want to do it, but we know that if we want to succeed after high school, there are not too many other options. We must stay on top of assignments and studying, as painful as it may sound. Not only will this benefit us, but it will make the year finish off so much faster. Let’s step up our game and make the best out of the end of the school year.
