Dress Code Rules, Too Much?

Tube tops, spaghetti straps, and short miniskirts. All these clothing items are some of the latest fashions that hit the popular clothing stores for teens. These tiny articles of clothing sometimes come with a big price tag at popular stores like Abercrombie and Hollister, but teens are willing to pay this because to some, these hot new items are a key to looking fabulous.

But some teachers and administration beg to differ; there opinion on what is acceptable to wear is different than the students at Ottawa High School.

This topic has been controversial and some teens at our school have refused to comply with the administration’s dress code regulations. Some seem to think that the policy has been taken a little too far and interfere with a student’s right to express themselves’ and create their own personal style. The ban of tank tops and spaghetti straps is a little over the top for some. It is not like students are roaming the halls sporting revealing string bikinis and belly shirts. Most of the tanks and string tops are modest, at least compared to today’s clothing standards. We don’t live in the 1800s, I think girls today should be allowed to show a little shoulder if they feel comfortable to.

In the end, I think most students will agree that it should be their choice to what they can and cannot wear. We all know that bikinis are out of the question, but tank tops and miniskirts are not nearly as horrible as the teachers and administration think they are. The administration should allow a little more leeway to the young women of Ottawa High School.

We are becoming young adults and we are starting to make decisions for ourselves. I think we all are starting to understand what clothing is socially acceptable to business and school, so I think we should be able to choose what we where to our school and jobs. We are beginning to pave the long road to our personal independence and I think being able to pick our clothing choices is a good start to encourage us to be self sufficient.
