The National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) was held in Kansas City, Kansas in November from the 19 to the 21. This event takes place every two years and this was the second time that Kansas has hosted the event, the first being in 1997. NCYC is a three day event for Catholic youth in high school. It is held in U.S. cities and organized in part by the host diocese of the city. The conference is organized by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM). During the conference, there is music, prayer, workshops, and liturgy. There are opportunities for reconciliation as well, which is the act of confessing sins to a priest. Other things that take place at NCYC include concerts, dances, and a comedy club. The thematic park is an area set up with educational and entertaining activities, as well as traditional exhibits and vendor booths.

NCYC began in 1983 as a regional conference, with one session for the east coast and one session for the west coast. The regional conferences had a few thousand youth in attendance. NCYC was merged into a national conference in 1991 and interest in the conference began to grow. The conference now attracts over 20,000 youth and adults for three days of worship, music, and fun.

My youth group from Sacred Heart Church here in Ottawa had the opportunity to attend the event, from November 19- 21. It was, in my opinion, an amazing experience and opportunity. With more than 22,000 high school teenagers, it was a great way to meet people from all over the United States, and to come together with one bond. There was never a dull moment, although days were long and by Sunday we were all exhausted. We learned so many new and exciting things, and were very fortunate to have the opportunity to go. The next NCYC will be held in Indianapolis in 2011.
