A Page of Personality

“There is so much media now with the Internet and people, and so easy and so cheap to start a newspaper or start a magazine, there’s just millions of voices and people want to be heard.” -Rupert Murdoch.
To some, high school newspapers are a joke, any journalism class is an “easy A” and no one really reads it anyway. To others, it means something more. The OHS newspaper, the Review, covers what is happening at school now. Online this year, we have created a more timely manor to deliver the news as it happens, or soon after.
I am a writer. It is something I am good at and always have been. It just comes naturally. I chose newspaper over yearbook because I am more comfortable writing than designing. I may have a way with words, but my creativity is not the strongest. For me, it is easier to tell a story, or express a point, through words rather than designing a page to fit a picture or an event and then write a short story about it.
Newspaper seems less stressful as well. Everyone has their own individual deadline. You are assigned your story, conduct a few interviews, get the facts, put it all together and turn it in. There may be more deadlines than just the four that a yearbook staff member has, but it is not nearly as stressful come that deadline time.
In newspaper, you can sometimes choose what you want to write about. Come up with a great idea, write about it. Have a strong opinion, write about it. It is your own personality and voice put into a story. For me, that is more important. Being able to express myself and how I feel, rather than recapping what happened during school. Being the editor-in-chief this year, I enjoy being able to provide the student body and community with how the students feel about what is going on.
At the end of the school year, I look forward to getting the yearbook, because it holds memories. But during the year, I look forward to reading what is going on now, right then and there.
“A president reins for four years. Journalism reins forever” -Oscar Wilde
