Student Distractions

Distractions during school. Every student has one. It might be that cute boy or girl across the room, a song stuck in your head, or maybe just something that you cannot get off of your mind. Almost every day, something takes us away from the classroom and into our own little world. Have these distractions become so interruptive that we really cannot do our best in school?

Just the other day I was in my CAT class, trying to focus on my homework that was due the next hour. Yes, I did procrastinate and wait until the very last minute to do my homework. When I could have been doing the assignment the night before, I was instead texting my friends and doing everything I could to put off my homework. Then, the next day, I had to scramble to finish, and just barely did. I could have focused on the work during CAT, but, instead, was distracted by the conversation going on at the next table over.

As almost everyone can relate, school would be so much easier without these social distractions, and we could be so much more focused. The fact is, however, that these disruptions will not disappear anytime soon. We will always have our friends to talk to, a favorite show on T.V. that we absolutely cannot miss, and just complete boredom in a class that causes a lack of focus. While some students do not have these problems, and those I do applaud, for the rest of us, getting through the day with complete focus and zero distractions is almost impossible. Yes, we all know that we should make a little more effort and we “will really try harder,” but is that going to happen? It is definitely not so likely.

The point that I am trying to make, is where one might say, “Try taking your own advice.” As much as I do not want to deal with homework after school, or sit in the classroom for seven hours out of the day, I know that if I don’t then I will not accomplish everything that I am capable of doing. If students will try a little harder, and focus a little more, they would agree that it will pay off in the end.
