Dance Regulations

Yes, everyone has learned that this year freshmen and sophomores cannot attend the prom under any circumstances. Whatever the motivations are, it has been made very clear that there is little to no room for negotiation. It is what it is and that is all fine and good. But as a part of student council I have become aware of the fact that new regulations are being made for normal school dances as well. No, it is not enough to take away the choice of who you want to take to your own prom, but now even the music styles are being censored. Nothing too dirty, nothing you could grind to. Nothing deemed “inappropriate” by the school administration. Not only is this regulation once again demeaning, but the lack of respect for our student body that has been displayed by administration by not having enough courtesy to formally inform us of what songs will and will not be allowed to be played is extremely disappointing. Yes, we understand that administration is the “Big Man” at the school. But still, the “Big Man” is working for us, the students. We are the future and therefore our teachers and administrators are the one held responsible for preparing us to lead this country. But the lack of democracy showed in this school frustrates me to such extremes that I am at a loss of words (and if anyone knows me, then they can say that does not happen often). I am not saying that grinding is necessarily the most wonderful thing that I have ever witnessed in my life, but I will say that the quality of music at our dances has resulted to a mixture of lame country songs and out-of-date annoying rap music. If you are going to ban certain rap or hip hop song, why not let the student body pick some alternatives. I do not think I have heard any Kings of Leon songs at any of our dances despite the fact that they are decently popular with our student body. Plus I think it would be pretty hard to grind to that. What I am saying is that administration is not doing a terrible job’ I am sure they have a lot on their plates. The least they could do would be to show us a little respect, which is exactly what they ask from us on a day-to-day basis.
