Violent thunderstorms and tornados tore through parts of Oklahoma and Kansas Monday, May 10. Initially, the National Weather Service estimated that about 10 tornadoes touched down. The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management spokesman Jerry Lojka reported that five people were killed, two in Oklahoma City and three in Cleveland County. Fatalities in Oklahoma City were a young boy who was hit by flying debris in his home and a man whose vehicle flipped on top of him. Information about the three individuals in Cleveland County was not given. Besides the three deaths, many other people were hurt, some severely.
Oklahoma City Deputy Fire Chief Cecil Clay will not rule out the possibility of finding more dead, but said conditions were tough for rescue workers early Tuesday.
“We have heavy fog and power lines down making it difficult to see all the hazards out there. We’ll wait for more sunshine to resume our search.”
Forecasters had predicted the storms since last week. The storms left tens of thousands of people without power, and produced hail the size of baseballs. Many homes and businesses were destroyed, and left many people with nothing. No injuries have been reported in Kansas, but the most destruction was reported in Belmont, a city east of Topeka. Widespread damage led authorities to close Interstate 40, a major highway route, just east of Oklahoma City. Traffic was backed up for miles.
The American Red Cross has opened up three shelters, including a family reunification center.
