Scheduling Updates

Enrollment is happening right now, and preparation is in full swing for the 2010—2011 school year. Yet, students focus on the end of this one, rather than the start of next one, which is very easy, considering the weather is gorgeous and spring fever is blazing. However, after the summer months, the students will return to the school they love, but it will be different.
It has been confirmed that Ottawa High School will have seven classes each day, with no study hall. Some students and faculty welcome the change.
“When I student- taught, I was at a school with the schedule we will have next year. It was definitely very different, but I actually liked it,” Natasha Jenkins, history teacher, said.
Jenkins is not alone. Other students look forward to this new schedule. However, many dislike the idea. Science teachers worry about being able to complete detailed labs in this time period.
Not having CAT will make students in sports lives slightly more hectic as well. Instead of having CAT to get assignments they missed after leaving for a game, they will need to visit the teacher before or after school. Others worry about the homework load.
“I think if the teachers don’t cut back on homework drastically people will struggle. Having the classes in one day also make high school seem like middle school, which I don’t really like. It is easier to do classes as a block schedule,” Kari Zimmerman, sophomore, said.
However, despite what students like or dislike this change was made to save money, an effect of the budget cuts. With the schedule change, hopefully the teacher cuts will be minimal.
TYPES OF SCHEDULING
Modified Block- You have every class Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday it is a block schedule.
Year-round school- There is school all year, except you get a month off for Christmas, another several weeks in the fall, a month off for summer, and more time off during the spring. It is the same amount of school, just more spread out.
Regular Day- Every day you have every class.
Block Scheduling- You have four classes one day, and four classes the next.
