March Gets Hit With Strange Weather

When you think of Spring Break, you imagine warm weather and a chance to dig out your shorts and flip- flops. The last thing that comes to your mind is having to bundle up when you go outside with all of your winter gear.

The month of March is considered, by many people in Kansas, to have unpredictable weather. It is located during a major transition time in the year. Winter is almost gone and spring is just around the corner. Mother Nature does not know which to be.

At the beginning of March, there were some rainy days, followed by a few days of sunshine, and then a week of rain and dark skies. Spring Break ended up being a disappointment, weather-wise, for a lot of Spring Breakers who wanted to soak up the sun. It also created obstacles for those who were traveling.

“The snow made the country road when we came home miserable,” said freshman Julia Burroughs.

The majority of the break was bleak and cloudy. The temperatures were in the 40s to 60s for most of the time. However, on Thursday the temperature warmed up to be in the sixties by noon. There were also clear skies along with the comfortable weather. This lasted through Friday until the cold front blew in from the West in the evening hours.

It was predicted that Ottawa would get two to five inches of snow on that Saturday, the first day of spring. The last weekend of Spring Break left Ottawa with icy roads and a lot of snow drifts. The country roads were bad enough to cancel school on the following Monday;however, it ended up being a 65 degree day.

“I thought [the snow day] was odd because the country roads were not as bad as they were saying,” Burroughs said.

Last year, at this time, spring acted more like spring. The first day of the season was sunny and had a high of 62 degrees. However, you cannot expect that to happen every year.

The forecasts for Ottawa are starting to warm up. However, the area has not escaped the threat of winter weather yet. On average for the area, freezing temperatures can be expected up until April 15.

What will the weather be like over the Easter weekend?

Friday, April 2- A few scattered thunderstorms are possible. Highs in the mid 60s and lows in the mid 40s. Precipitation: 60%

Saturday, April 3- Mostly cloudy. Highs in the mid 60s and lows in the low 50s. Precipitation: 20%.

Sunday, April 4- Partly cloudy. Highs in the low 70s and lows in the upper 50s. Precipitation: 0%
