O.H.S. newspaper and yearbook students attended the Kansas Scholastic Press Association competition (KSPA) which was held in Lawrence at K.U.  It took place on Feb 26. More than 405 students with about 615 entries from 21 schools competed in the KSPA regional contest.

In first place for theme and graphics development was Tabitha McPheron and Danon Taylor, sophomores.  In second place in news and writing was Kali Hinman, sophomore. Third place was for a yearbook layout and the winner was Katie Hull, junior. Alyssa Currier, senior had received the honorable mention for yearbook layout. Chelsea Jamison, sophomore got an honorable mention for news and writing. Shelby Tillery and Katie Hull, sophomores both got honorable mentions for theme and graphic development. Jena Richardson, senior got an honorable mention for student life photography. Emily Leadbetter got the last honorable mention and it was for newspaper layout.

The KSPA has occurred every year for the past twenty eight years. “It was sort of hot and cold for me. Overall I liked making the layout and going to KU to compete, but the process was very stressful, especially when the printer would not print our pages out correctly.” Danon Taylor, sophomore stated. “I enjoyed going it was a good way to get out of school” Chelsea Jamison, sophomore.

Hopefully there is more to come from our students participating in the KSPA. Maybe next time we might just take first in the whole competition. But it is just one of those things that we will just have to wait and see. But until then we must keep practicing.
