The American Eagle Distribution Center in town has been generous and given the renaissance program a grant. The reason for the grant is for students who cannot afford to take dual credit classes. Whatever the reason may be the scholarship helps pay for the classes so they are not deprived of learning when they want too. The scholarship goes to students who have free or reduced lunches.
In Ottawa 264 out of the 760 students who enrolled were considered on the list for free or reduced lunches. This year alone ten students have canceled their enrollment in dual credit courses because the cost was too expensive. The average cost for a dual course would be about $80 per credit per hour and $240 for a three-hour class.
American eagle’s main focus is education, community and service. They only gave out two grants, one in Pennsylvania and the other one was to Ottawa. The grant is good because as of right now there are 75 students enrolled in dual credit classes. Every student who decides to take the dual credit classes are able to graduate with at least 21 college credits in high school.
At first, many did not understand the Renaissance Program, but now it is starting to become clear. It was created to encourage and support both academic achievement and character development. Both of these are critical to the future of our community and society. “I think that it makes us feel like we are still in middle school” Kim Wagner stated. “I think they encourage students to do better in school” said Crystal Holly.
The grant money which added up to about $9,000 was put into a special account so that it gain earn money from interest. To apply for the scholarship, forms will be available at pre enrollment. You must fill out the information and write an essay about why you should be most eligible to receive this scholarship.
Natasha Jenkins and Bethany Hofmeier are hosting a fundraiser to gain more money for the account. It will be in the Cyclone Room Feb 23 from 5-7:30pm. It is a potato bar fundraiser, and tickets will be available at the office, Peoples Bank North and Kansas State Bank North. It is $5 for adults which include a potato, a drink and a dessert, and ages 10 and under cost $3.50 for the same things. Dessert Donations will be accepted as well. Show your spirit and help raise money for our school.

Chelsea:
Thanks for doing an article on this!
A couple of clarifications- the grant WAS from American Eagle, but it comes specifically from their Foundation, which is geared towards helping communities. The grant applications were available in Pennsylvania and Ottawa, as those are the locations of their two plants.
Thanks again for your hard work and getting the word out!
