Abortion is a topic that is widely debated throughout the country. There are two main stances, Pro-choice and Pro-life. Pro-choice people support the idea that a woman should have control over what happens to her body, that means she should be able to make the choice as to whether she want to terminate a pregnancy or not. Pro-life people believe that women should not have the right to abortion; a baby is a human from conception, and to abort it is murder.

Abortion has a long, dark background. In the 1820s laws started appearing that regulated the terms on which you could receive an abortion. By the 20th century most abortions had been outlawed. There are different stages of abortion: 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 18 weeks, 6 months and a partial birth abortion. Feminists have always tried to gain female rights, thereby fighting for the right for abortion.

But by 1965 abortion was banned in all 50 states, with a few exceptions pertaining to mother and baby safety.  Then, in 1973, the Roe v. Wade case made it so that most of the abortion laws that were place unconstitutional. In the present day the same rules still apply. In the first trimester a woman and her doctor can decide to terminate the pregnancy, but after that point restrictions start being made.

Pro-Life continues to fight the fight against abortion.

“You’re killing a baby. A fetus is a human from the point of conception, and you won’t murder a grown human, so why a baby?” said Junior, Cesia Crook.

Pro-choice also continues to fight to keep their rights. “You should be able to make your own choices, it’s your body not anyone else’s,” said freshman, Katie Miller.

But everything is not always black and white, and this applies to abortion. In the gray area are people who believe in taking responsibility for your action.

“I think it’s ultimately up to the parents, but if you are going to have sex, then you should take responsibility for it,” Said Junior, Dustin Burnett. But at the same time certain circumstances, like mothers health or baby deformities, can blur the rights to abortion.

“All life is valuable, but certain situations, like the possible death of the mother, could make an abortion necessary,” said Junior, Paul Thomas.

On Jan. 22nd, the March for Life activities was held in Wash. DC. This is a time for everyone to decide where they stand on the subject. What do you think? Pro-choice or Pro-life?
