We all know about the fog that was recently in our presence for several days. It was not pleasant to have around and it caused a lot of confusion on the roads. Not only did the fog make it hard for people to see but it also made the roads nearly impossible to drive on. Since the days before it had been freezing or below freezing the fog made the roads extremely slick.
A woman with the name of Jankovich said the fog was terrible. “You could only see to the end of your headlights, maybe 500 feet at the most. My son-in-law was doing about 50, and everybody was passing us.” KCTV 5 News reported.
It was said that when people stepped out of the car it was also slick underfoot.
The fog caused a lot of wrecks but there was one in particular that happened on Interstate 35 near the Wellsville exit. On Jan 16, at around 7:40 in the morning, cars, pickups, minivans and a half-dozen hulking tractor-trailers collided. There were a total of 30 cars involved in the wreck, the biggest car pileup in the state of Kansas ever.
Emergency crews from Franklin, Miami, Johnson and Anderson counties descended on the wreck-strewn KCTV 5 News reported that Mike McRoberts was heading to Williamsburg and he passed through, well tried to pass through the huge mess that had just had happens hours earlier.
Glass, debris, cars and even people were sprung out miles down the road on the highway. People were in shock and did not know what to do. People helped other people, even if they were hurt.
“I think it is extremely nice of people to help when they did not have to. It shows that people come together in a time of need. “ said sophomore Megan Shirley.
“There were people out of their vehicles who were in shock, standing there bloody, in pain. I gave my coat to one gentleman who had chest injuries and multiple lacerations. A teenage woman got out and didn’t have any shoes on.”
There were 24 people who had been injured minor in this pileup. The majority of them were treated and released from the hospital.
A 3-year-old was the only death in this accident.
“It is very sad that a young child could die in such an unfortunate way, ” said freshman Logan Butler.
Even though that you might think that sometimes you are invincible to the road and to other people, bad things like this can happy. It is better to be safe than sorry.
