Do you want to help out the hungry people in our community and around the world? Well, here is your chance. On Jan.29, OHS will be hosting the Empty Bowls fund raiser. It will be in the Cyclone room from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Empty Bowls raises money for people who do not have a much to eat. People from all over the community including students from the entire Ottawa school district, Ottawa University students, senior citizens and even local artists take time to make decorated, clay bowls to sell. On Friday the 29th, these bowls will be sold along with soup and bread.

The guests at the fund raiser can select a bowl of their choice and have their soup served to them in it. It is a reminder that around the world there are bowls that have no food in them. It is requested by the organizers that the guests donate at least $10 along with the price of the dinner and the crafted bowl. There will also be a silent auction on selected items.  All of the proceeds will go to three of Franklin County’s hunger- fighting organizations, including Hope House, ECKAN and the Franklin County Emergency Temporary Shelter Association (F.R.E.T.S.A.).

This is the second year OHS has hosted this event. However, it is the third year Ottawa has participated in Empty Bowls. The first year it was held at a different location. According to art teacher Melissa Mitchell, the fund raiser has raised more and more money each year. She said that the first year raised about $600, and $1500 was raised last year.

“The past two years have gone really well and hopefully this year it can do just as well or better,” Mitchell said.

The OHS students in art teacher Joleen Thompson’s clay and ceramics classes have made bowls for the event. One of the students who crafted a bowl is Tabitha Rockers. She said that this is her second year of making a bowl for the fund raiser.

“It’s for the community, so I will do anything for the community. If I give, I know that if I am in need I will receive,” Rockers said.

So, if you want to help out the people in the community who are hungry, participate in Empty Bowls on Jan. 29.
