Memories of the Past… Hopes for the Future

The giant, crystal ball dropped as the last seconds of 2009 ticked away. Millions of people around the world stood in the streets or around their T.V. watching and welcoming in the New Year.
The year 2009 was packed with exciting, tragic and historical events on world, national and local levels. Early last year, President Barack Obama was elected into office. Early last summer, all music was put on hold as one of the greatest artists, Michael Jackson, died. His death brought people together and made everyone reflect on old times. Later in the summer, the nation was swept with the great debate over the U.S. Healthcare reform. This led to many Americans being upset with their elected congressmen and women and senators. Along with Fox News talk show host Glen Beck, thousands of people marched in Washington D.C. to protest what was being proposed in the government concerning healthcare. This last year, everyone has suffered and had set backs from the economic crisis which became and still is the worst since the Great Depression in the 30s.
On a local level, in 2009, three different sports teams of Ottawa High School made it to state, including boys basketball, baseball and softball. This past fall, the football team regrouped and pulled out the long awaited victory over Baldwin to break the long losing streak. The school also voted on a new mantra which ended up being, “No Clonin’ Around: 100% Career Bound!!!”
Though 2009 was very eventful, 2010 holds high hopes for a great year. Coming on Feb. 12 through the 28 will be the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Everyone can cheer on their favorite athletes as they fight for the gold medal. The U.S. government has goals to solve the economic hardships and resolve the healthcare plan.
Ottawa also has some exciting activities and events ahead. For the people who are interested in the arts, there are several plays coming up this spring and summer that are for young people. ACT Ottawa is holding auditions for Alice in Wonderland this March.
Ottawa High School is coming up on exciting events also. Soon, the basketball teams will be heading into Sub-State and possibly State tournaments. Along with basketball comes Winter Royalty where two new seniors will be crowned king and queen. When the winter season is passed the spring sports will come in full swing.
“I am looking forward to the track season this year because I can get in shape,” sophomore Cadence Ishmael said.
After all of the school sports and activities come to an end, a special event, planned by OHS sophomore Kaylin Gragg, will come to the Ottawa community. Gragg said that she is organizing a cystic fibrosis walk to help the people in Ottawa who have been diagnosed with the disease. Cystic fibrosis is one of the most common lung diseases that exists in children and adults. It causes mucus to build up in your lungs and digestive track and can be very serious and even fatal. Gragg said she is really looking forward to the actual walk this summer.
Though 2009 was filled with exciting events and fond memories, 2010 has great things in store to kick off the new decade.
