New to the School: Smoothie Tuesdays

Most of us at Ottawa High School have all become comfortable with and are aware of Cappuccino Fridays, which take place in the library from 7:15 to 11:15, but following in their footsteps is Smoothie Tuesdays. Smoothie Tuesdays are a healthier alternative to the 142-calorie cappuccino, served with whipped cream and cinnamon. That may have you rethinking which day of the week you spend that dollar.
Smoothie Tuesdays is done by an Ottawa High School group called P.E.P, Peers Empowering Peers. This group of students and Cherry Coen, culinary teacher, try to promote healthy eating habits and encourage you to nix the bad ones.
“Last summer we took kids to a P.E.P rally put on by the Action for Healthy Kids Foundation. You could apply for a mini grant that would be used to promote healthy eating in your school, so we did and we got one. All the money we raise from our t-shirts and smoothies will go back into the account to continue to promote healthy lifestyles. We are planning on using the money to get a pilates class going after the New Year, and to buy gift certificates from Subway and other healthy places to hand out to people that are caught eating healthy,” Coen said.
So how exactly do you get that smoothie? The smoothies are for sale before and after school on no day other than Tuesday, in room #107. Or, you can preorder smoothies during CAT on Monday and they will be personally delivered to you in your CAT class on Tuesday. The fact that the smoothies are a healthier, more flavorful alternative may not be enough to get you to try one, but how about the fact that there are more options when it comes to fulfilling your taste buds needs?
For the first sale, which will be taking place on Tuesday, Dec. 15 there are three options, all of which are diverse in flavor. You could have an Eggnog smoothie to celebrate the holiday season, a Fun-in-the-Sun Mixed Berry smoothie as a last attempt to remember the summer or a traditional Strawberry Banana smoothie simply because that is what sounded good.
“I think that smoothies are really good so I am super excited for Smoothie Tuesdays. It is really good that it is healthy and I’m really stoked for the pilates class too. I am really happy our school got that grant so we could do this stuff,” said sophomore Megan Shirley.
It has become very apparent that our school and many others have come to a halt financially. So the assumption that the money going into Smoothie Tuesdays is a waste came as no surprise. That is one issue that needs to not be worried about because the money going into Smoothie Tuesdays came from a grant from the Action for Healthy Kids Foundation. The foundation awarded the P.E.P group with a $1,000 grant, to promote healthy lifestyles and eating in the school.
Currently Smoothie Tuesday is P.E.P’s biggest steps towards a healthier lifestyle for OHS Students, but they are pushing the administration and the food service for a salad bar. If you too would like to nix your nasty habits and become healthier, help support the P.E.P group by buying an “Eat Healthy” T-Shirt that will soon be for sale in the lunch room or join the pilates class after the New Year. It is never too late to take a walk on the healthy side!
