Cyclones through the Years

Ottawa High School has been in existence since 1864, always known as the “Ottawa Cyclones.” However, the appearance of our beloved mascot has changed many times.

In total there have been three mascots that stuck since our school was founded. Although, other versions have shown up here and there by printing companies.

The first one was the fighting cyclone. Later was the “Power Clone,” which was on the shield. And currently we have the “saw-blade” cyclone.

“It (the cyclone) has changed a ton. But none of them has had the impact this one has. It is on everything,” Ryan Cobbs, assistant principal, said.

The current cyclone has been extremely popular. In OHS’s history, “Ottawa” or “O” was on most things. But the current cyclone is everywhere you look.

“When I went to school no one had a specific logo. It just said ‘Ottawa’. Now everything is the present cyclone,” Cobbs said.

Although the current cyclone has made the largest impact, the other ones have not been totally forgotten. There are various places you can spot the older ones. For example, the “Power Clone” is on the podium in the room of Aaron Dirk, social studies teacher.

The student body also approves of our mascot.

“I think the cyclone says we are a strong- willed school and will stop and nothing until we achieve victory. It just looks tough, like us. Plus, the bold red makes it vibrant,” Ryan Tipton, freshman, said.

Although the cyclone itself has undergone some changes, the Ottawa Cyclones and their spirit remains the same.
