Student Summer Vacations

As the summer months play out, each student has their own agenda. While some work hard to save up money for college, others relax and enjoy the break from school.
Jamie Soderberg, freshman, spent the majority of his summer playing baseball with three different baseball teams. He played with the Kiwanis, Ottawa All-Stars and The Force.
The All-Stars went to the state tournament. At this tournament the All-Stars won two games, but lost two as well.
Ending up in third place Soderberg said, “Getting third was exciting, but we were still a little disappointed we didn’t go farther.”
He said he enjoys playing baseball because it is really fun and keeps him in shape. While he was not on the field, Soderberg hung out with his friends and relaxed.
While Soderberg’s summer heavily involved sports, others took a different path. For instance, sophomore Megan Shirley along with her cousin, junior Reggie Graf, took a trip to Taiwan for two weeks where they visited their aunt and uncle.
In Taiwan, they did numerous things, including sight-seeing, shopping, surfing, hiking in the rainforest, going to the beach and living through a minor earthquake.
During Shirley’s summer days in Kansas she played soccer, completed driver’s education, babysat two boys with sophomore Dana Peterson and went swimming.
“My favorite part of the summer was definitely no school and getting to spend time with my friends,” Shirley said.
But to some students, summer is not all play. Senior Callie Paquette worked at the Bea Martian Peck Animal Shelter cleaning cages and walking dogs.
Working up to 20 hours a week, Paquette said her favorite part was getting to work with the animals and giving them medication because she wants to be a veterinarian. She mentioned her dismay for cleaning up dirty cages twice a day, which she said was he worst part of her job.
However, Paquette’s summer was not all work. She also spent time vacationing in Washington State, Branson, as well as attending two summer camps.
“My favorite part of summer was going to Washington to visit my cousins. We went rock climbing and it was really fun,” Paquette said.
However your summer was spent, many people can unanimously agree that summertime is one of the best times of the year. Nevertheless, we still come back to school, hang out with friends here and enjoy ourselves till next summer!
