Today, many teenagers tune into the local radio channel 95.7 to hear their favorite pop songs by Lady Gaga, or the freshest rapper. But that is not the only type of popular music being listened to by the younger population of America.

The up-rise of Indie rock or Alternative music is becoming very apparent. Not only do the Sirius music channels have their very own alternative and indie channels, but word is being spread about bands that many people would never have thought would become popular.

A good example is the band, The Kings of Leon. Their breakthrough song was Sex on Fire, and was then followed by the hit, “Use Somebody,” which really hit home with all of the love struck teenagers roaming the halls of our familiar school.

If you were to go to a Kings of Leon concert you would find that the arena would be filled with all of the bands followers who have just as much spirit and love for the band’s music as the thousands of Miley Cyrus followers.

Megan Shirley, sophomore, who is an avid Kings of Leon listener, said, “I just love his voice, it has a sweet sort of rustic sound.” Amanda Vang, senior also said, “I love his voice and the way he makes different kinds of music.”

Another band that has become popular is the, The Avett Brothers. The two brothers and fellow band mates have drawn in college students across all 50 states. The more shows they play the more fans they gain. They have also release a new and highly anticipated album titled, “I am Love and You,” with the Sony label and the big time producer Rick Ruben who has also worked with Johnny Cash, Tom Petty and the Dixie Chicks.

So maybe there will be a day in the near future where you turn on the radio to hear The Avett Brothers, instead of latest pop culture hype that you hear on 95.7.
